Mother’s Day Cakes from Magpies

Magpies would like to provide a public service message by reminding everyone that Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 11th.

First, a history lesson.

Ana Jarvis was a fan of simplicity, and her idea was that we should give our mothers a single white carnation to represent the purity of motherhood. However, Ana never had one of our cakes.

Had she enjoyed a Magpies creation, we feel certain she’d have been on board for treating mom to something delicious for Mother’s Day!

This year is a special Mother’s Day in that it’s the 100th anniversary of the holiday started by Ana Jarvis way back in 1908.

It was later made a national holiday by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914. He declared every second Sunday in May from then out be a day to honor all of America’s mothers. We couldn’t agree more.

Honor the first most important woman in your life this year with a custom cake or cupcakes.

You can bet your mother has enough kitchen stuff, scarves, mom art, and jewelry to last a lifetime. This year, incorporate a little all butter love in the form of a Magpies treat for mom, grandma or other special women in your life!

Happy Mother’s Day!

Wedding Cake Trends for Spring 2014

Wedding season is nearly upon us and as a Knoxville bakery, wedding cakes are a big part of what we do here at Magpies. We wanted to share a little bit about some current wedding cake trends we’ve been seeing to inspire any brides out there who might be looking for wedding cake ideas.

Round, tiered-cakes are always in style as many brides wish to stick with wedding cake tradition. We created the above cake for a faux wedding event at Knoxville’s Historic Westwood, the home of Knox Heritage. With the sweet scallops and pale green color scheme, this custom wedding cake would be beautiful for a wedding any month of the year.

Particularly popular this season seems to be including flowers and other nature-centric motifs. This gorgeous butterfly cake (below) was actually created by our own Sarah Ono Jones as a custom birthday cake, but we think it would make a lovely wedding cake as well. Especially for a bright, cheery spring or summer wedding.

Bold and unusual colors are another growing trend when it comes to custom wedding cakes in Knoxville. Cakes that incorporate all sorts of bold, bright color schemes seem to be the top choice of some brides. And who says wedding cakes must be white?

This Gatsby-style wedding cake is another Magpies creation, brought to life by our talented cake creators. Don’t you love the art deco touches and intricate gold patterns? Almost too pretty to eat…but just almost.

Naked cakes are still popular this year, too. These chic, simple cakes are perfect for a wedding with rustic touches and offer an elegant focal point to the event.

Coordinating textures are another popular wedding cake trend. That is, matching the cake’s decorative elements to those of the bride’s dress.

Wedding cake trends are always changing, but the most important thing when looking for a wedding cake in Knoxville is that you pick one that is perfect for you.

These are just a few of this year’s popular wedding cake trends. But the wedding cake isn’t bound by tradition anymore. Couples should feel free to express themselves in the design of their wedding cake. Magpies can help you make your custom wedding cake design a reality.

Just give us a call to schedule a consultation or learn more about Knoxville custom wedding cake options!
