CELEBRATION CAKE INFO / FAQ's

Need a cake? Order early for best results.

The absolute deliciousness of our cakes is our number one priority. Magpies cakes are baked fresh to order, and we never freeze them*. We do try to keep a small selection of extra cakes on hand for last minute orders, but to insure you get exactly what you want, it is important to order your cake in advance.

To guarantee your selection, please follow our ordering guidelines here:

01. May I leave my order on your answering machine?

We begin our baking at 6:00 am, so unless your cake is on the baking list that early, we can't guarantee it will be made. We must confirm all orders by phone, but if you know exactly what you want, leave the order on the machine so we can add it to the baking list. We will then call you to confirm your order after 9:00 am.  Be sure to leave a call-back number so we can get in touch.

02. Why do I have to order my Monday cake so early?

If you need your cake Monday morning, there is not enough time to bake, cool and put your cake together for safe transport before 12:00 or 1:00. We rarely have many orders for Monday, so we spend this day organizing for the week ahead. We are closed Sunday, and do not usually bake on Saturday, so Monday cakes are usually baked on Friday. But occasionally, if we have cakes ordered for late afternoon pickup on Monday, we may bake them Monday morning.

03. May I order a cake in the morning and pick it up that afternoon?

It never hurts to ask, but we may not be able to accommodate this request. We usually bake extra layers in anticipation of last minute orders, but we don't bake every flavor every day. We start baking at 6:00 am , so the earlier you call, the better your chances.

04. May I email my order to you?

If you're ordering a standard cake at least three days in advance, you may email an order to: magpiesinfo -at - gmail.com, but all orders must be confirmed by phone. Please include your phone number and the date you want your cake in all your correspondence. We hope to have an order form on our website soon.

05. I want a standard design, but I want the colors to match my invitation.

We want you to love your cake, and are happy to custom match your colors. We charge $5.00 per color for this service. The standard colors we mix are a little different every week, and people have wildly varying views of what colors are. We have learned that one person's lime green is another's avocado, and that there are many, many shades of fuscia. So if you are at all particular about the specific shade of your colors, simply provide us with a color swatch to use as a guide. (this can be mailed, emailed or dropped by the shop; you can even send us to a paint swatch website) We cannot mix a custom color without a swatch.

06. Can you finish a standard cake in a color?

Yes, we can tint the finish icing to a specific color. There is a $10.00 charge for this service. As with the previous question, you must provide us with a color swatch for reference.

07. Can you finish a standard design in fondant?

Finishing in fondant gives a cake a more formal and elegant appearance. We can finish any cake in fondant. If we do this, the detailing will be done in royal icing. For a general pricing guideline when ordering fondant, a standard design with white fondant finish in one of our six standard designs, would add 50% to the price of the cake. For tinted fondant with a standard design, add 75%.

To compare, a 7" classic flavor/polka dot cake would be $28 in Buttercream, $42 in white fondant, and $49 in a tinted fondant. If you want a different design, refer to the custom cake information. (here)

(note: custom cake orders must be ordered at least on week in advance)
